Gayl Murphy is a Hollywood and entertainment reporter who, after suffering through countless interviews with people who were disasterously unprepared for the process, wrote a book telling subjects how to prepare to be interviewed.
Now she's telling interviewers themselves how to prepare to get the most out of their interviewees. In this session from the 2006 Podcast and New Media Expo, Murphy covers the basics of good interviewing technique: making sure the show is not about you but about your guest; listening to the answers you get; sticking to a script; and, above all, preparation, preparation, preparation.
Murphy has the experience to back up what she says, having over 14,000 interviews to her credit. Most of these have been with celebrities from the entertainment world but the principles that make a good interview - and a good interviewer - are the same no matter who the subject may be.
The bulk of this session is highly interactive as Murphy answers a stream of questions from podcasters keen to sharpen their interviewing skills. This is definitely a session to listen to if you're thinking of adding guests to your podcasting line-up or if you're a podcaster keen to increase the news quota in your shows by reporting from live events.
