Podcasters often stumble over the technical aspects of their product: the audio files. At the 2006 Podcast and Portable Media Expo, Doug Kaye, IT Conversation's original host and GigaVox CTO demystifies the geeky part of podcasting. Learn about the differences between lossless and lossy compression, find out which bit rates to use and why, understand that knowing the technicalities can make a better sounding podcast.

New podcasters are confronted by a vast new world of compression and decompression codecs, file formats, sample rates, bit rates, choices between stereo and mono, all the while having to be concerned about the quality of their recordings and keeping file sizes reasonable. Having your podcast sound like rubbish is not the only danger when picking arbitrary values, incompatibilities in playback are also concerns when distributing your podcast.

Kaye uses his many years of experience with sound recording and post production to level the playing field. You'll learn when to use what formats and why, how to best capture your audio without going overboard, choose the best sample and bit rates and keeping the quality of your audio as high as possible. Even with so many options and possibilities, producing great quality audio does not have to be a black art.

Doug Kaye is IT Conversations' original host, producer, developer, writer, interviewer and engineer. He launched IT Conversations in June 2003 and still produces many of the site's programs. Doug is now CTO of GigaVox Media and Executive Director of the Conversations Network.

In what seems to him like a previous lifetime, Doug was a recording engineer and sound editor in film and television. After mixing one too many TV commercials and English dubs of Lina Wertmuller films he made a break to the software industry. After another 18 years as an IT entrepreneur/CEO, he successfully worked his way down the corporate ladder and served as CTO/VP Engineering of four dot-com startups: one successful IPO, two shutdowns, one still on life support.
